Cheese BTC Widget

The Bitcoin price on your home screen

Cheese BTC Widget is a tiny Android home-screen widget that shows the current Bitcoin price in USD or EUR. No accounts, no ads, no tracking — just the number, fetched from cheeserobot.org/price/latest.json.

Features

  • One-glance price. Bitcoin logo, currency symbol, and the price as a whole number. That’s it.
  • USD or EUR — pick which one you want when you add the widget.
  • Multiple widgets, multiple currencies. Add it twice for both $ and side by side.
  • Auto-refresh roughly every 30 minutes (Android’s minimum for home-screen widgets).
  • Tap to refresh for an immediate update.
  • Dark mode aware. Background follows your system theme.
  • Locale-aware formatting. 65,432 for English locales, 65.432 for European.
  • Honest about errors. Shows ! and posts a notification explaining exactly what went wrong (no internet, HTTP error, bad data, etc.).
  • Tiny footprint. No background services, no analytics, no third-party SDKs. Contacts exactly one host: cheeserobot.org.
  • Free and open source (MIT licence).

Installing

Zapstore

Open zapstore.dev/apps/org.cheeserobot.btcwidget in the Zapstore app and tap install.

F-Droid

Pending publication. Once listed, search for Cheese BTC Widget in the F-Droid client.

Sideload the APK

Grab a build from the GitHub releases page, allow installs from unknown sources, then open the APK.

No launcher icon — that’s intentional. The widget itself is the entire app, so you won’t see “Cheese BTC Widget” in your app drawer. Don’t worry, it’s installed.

Adding it to your home screen

  1. Long-press an empty spot on your home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Scroll to Cheese BTC Widget and drag BTC Price onto the screen.
  4. A small picker pops up. Tap US Dollars ($) or Euros (€).
  5. The widget loads with the current price within a few seconds.

Want both currencies? Just repeat the steps and pick the other one. The widgets are independent. Long-press the widget to resize from 2×1 up to roughly 4×2.

Privacy

The widget does exactly one thing over the network: a GET request to https://cheeserobot.org/price/latest.json, every ~30 minutes and on tap.

No analytics, no telemetry, no ad networks, no account required.

Troubleshooting

The widget shows !
Pull down your notification shade — the widget posts the actual error there. Usually it’s no internet, a captive portal, or a temporary API hiccup. Tap to retry.
The price hasn’t moved in hours
Android caps widget refreshes at 30 minutes. Tap the widget to fetch immediately.
I want to change the currency
Currency is set when you add the widget. Remove it and add a fresh one to pick again.
